Derek A. Terry

From teenage suicide attempts and childhood sexual assault, to civil rights leader and social justice trainer; from bachelors and masters degrees in biochemistry/molecular biology to a masters degree in divinity and a career as a bi-vocational pastor; Derek Terry is one of his generation's leading voices. He travels extensively preaching, teaching, lecturing, and presenting on issues of spirituality, civil rights, race & social justice, income inequality, and courageous living. Dedicated to living his authentic truth and encouraging others to do the same, Derek Terry challenges audiences and individuals to ALWAYS LIVE WELL!
Born, raised, and educated in Louisville, Kentucky, Derek is currently the Pastor of the St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he leads a thoroughly diverse multicultural and multigenerational congregation that is a shinning example of how different populations can work and worship together. He regularly preaches on relevant and thought-provoking topics that not only inspire and encourage, but also challenge, and call to action.
In addition to his work as a pastor and renowned speaker, Derek is an entrepreneur using his intellect and skills to help individuals and organizations alike. As the founder and developer of Yatamu Naturals, Derek has used his chemistry acumen to create natural skin and hair care products for ten years. The Yatamu (Swahili for sweet/gentle) brand also offers peace bead bracelets and fresh apparel (t-shirts/hoodies/and the like). Furthermore, in 2008 Derek used his administrative skills to start DAT Solutions & Consulting, a small firm that consults individual/organizations in administrative best practices, and marketing/brand management solutions including social media branding, graphic design solutions, full printing/creation services, leadership/program/organization development and fundraising/capital management. The consulting firm has a full staff that provides complete business administration and marketing/branding solutions.
In the fall of 2015 Rev. Derek was featured on the three part season premiere of the Iyanla: Fix My Life show on the Oprah Winfrey Network. During those episodes Rev. Derek established himself as a leading out gay clergyperson coming out to more than one million viewers on national television. Those three episodes were some of the highest rated Fix My Life episodes to air. Since then, Rev. Derek as been featured on CNN, The Huffington Post, Gawker, The Cincinnati Enquirer, The Cincinnati Herald, and other national and international media outlets. He is also the author of two books- God Loves Me & So Do I (2015), and The Shattered Ornament (2017). Derek also published the Black & Queer Icons 2019 Wall Calendar featuring twelve famous Black Same Gender Loving Individuals in history.
